Long time coming..

Ok ok.. i know it's been a looong time since i updated this place.. so here's a brief summary of activities that has happened since January..

January: Flew to Maui, Hawaii to visit mum. Visit my facebook for pictures please.

February: Started work as a sports manager for Ministry of Education. So far so good.. quite happy.. less work, less stress!

March: Broke up with girlfriend (jesusfuckingchrist..)

April: Confirmed August climbing trip to California with Eugene, Chris & PJ and purchased SIA tickets sia (pun intended)!

May: One night of passion resulted in the unexpected (jesusfuckingchrist)..

June: Visited Korea for work (once again, please visit facebook for pictures).

July: Feeling discerning & disenchanted..

22nd Consecutive SEA Games Gold Medal

Yes, our guys did it. 8 out of 13 players were playing their first SEA Games. The gold was in the bag when they beat closest rival Philippines 7-3. Last SEA Games, the goal difference was only 1.
I'll be getting free MCs from these soon-to-be doctor brothers in a few years time.

Our National Water Polo Team left this morning to fight for the country's 22nd Gold Medal at the 24th SEA Games in Korat, Thailand. Many of them asked if i was going up (Justina is going on Thursday) and their disappointment when i told them no made me wish i had planned my trip to Krabi to include a side trip to Korat.

I was also touched when one of the players referred to me and Justina as 'back up' heroes. I often see our roles as 'the behind the scenes people' that make the sport work. Very often, you'll only see the athletes, coach and team manager, but there's always the hidden people that supports the sport.. and that's us. So we're very much part of the team.. you just won't see us in any newspaper or on television lah.

I finally ran the Standard Chartered Marathon today after spending the last few years contemplating whether to run it. My timing was 5hr20min according to my watch. Some people might think that it's not fantastic but being a first time marathon for me, i'm pretty happy just to be able to complete it.

And i'm so freaking happy to finally have that exclusive Adidas 'finisher' shirt!

Short trip to Malacca

Went up with buddy Chris Brown to Malacca for a day today. Ate chicken rice balls, drank at a nearby backpacker's lodge (see picture), did some shopping, ate KFC, had Starbucks, then started the drive back to Singapore at around 5.00pm.

Been a long time coming

It's been a pretty busy 30 days since i last updated this place. Had to baby sit an Iranian and the Korean Water Polo team plus train for the marathon.. busy busy busy. And with the SEA Games just around the corner AND local competitions going on.. sigh. Just have to tahan lah.

On the plus side, i have a Krabi trip to look forward to in December. It's going to be quite a big group.. Me, Jo, Eugene, Jasper, Ting Yang plus 4 of Jo's girlfriends. This time round, i'm definitely going to spend a day scuba diving!

Insanity is really a wonderful thing

I ran 21km tonight. 2 rounds of my usual 10.5km route. What was once a torturous route has become pretty manageable. Managed to improve my breathing skills too. The run ended with me still full of breath and i felt that i could continue running. Sadly, my legs felt otherwise.. they feel like they're 80 years old.

Reservist

Just had the best In-Camp Training of my life. This is the 2nd last reservist before our unit stands down next year, so i was basically in a 'switch off' mood. And what made this all the more enjoyable was that we were in a new camp. New bunks, new (CLEAN) bathrooms, new EVERYTHING!

And it was in Jurong West instead of Tuas. In Tuas, all you saw were shipyards and industrial areas and there were all sorts of industrial noises. And getting home was a nightmare. Taxis were non-existent and the bus only came once every 30 minutes.

Jurong West had HDB flats right in front of the camp! We couldn't believe it! What a pity we only have one more reservist stint to go..

Climb On 2007

Accompanied the gang to Climb On today. Did not want to take part as the long waiting times and crowds did not really appeal to me. Whenever someone asked me why i was not participating, i'd say i was the team manager. Hey, someone had to look after the valuables and take pictures right?

And hereeeee they are!

And what is this you ask? Well it's Eugene's ass! Well, sort of. There was this route which required the climber to enter feet first and then exit the hole (without touching the ground) and then proceeding with the climb.

Come on Eugene! Think like a porn star! You can do it!

Pei Jun tries another route which uses the same hole but this time, it requires the head to go into the hole first (that sounds so wrong).

Army Half Marathon

I completed 1 of my 2 targets for 2007 today. I ran a half marathon. And it was done with only 2 objectives - have fun and have a good learning experience.

The run was interesting. Never saw so much people running at the same time. Couldn't help but think that we were lemmings running towards some cliff to jump off.. especially when we were on the Sheares Bridge!

Saw some people actually running with their backpacks. What a bunch of morons i thought until i had to queue 60 minutes to retrieve my checked-in bag after the run.

Towards the last 500m of the run, i felt as if i NEVER wanted to do this again and how the hell was i going to do 42km in December?! But then, later as the day passed and my mind and body was better rested, i felt that not only was it possible.. i was also eager for it.

And here's my result for the run.

I know it's not fantastic, but somehow i feel really proud when i see my name there. It shows that i accomplished something that i had set my mind to.. run a 21km marathon.

Went for a run at East Coast Park today. Jo roller bladed while i ran. The rain interrupted the run and we had to take shelter at the hawker centre.

Later, after reaching SAFRA Resort Country Club, we saw this..The sun's rays coming through the cloud formed an interesting glow around it.

New routine

Started a new routine today. 3 times a week, i will run to work. Have to start conditioning my body to run in the mornings if i'm going to start running marathons. An interesting fact is that the distance to work is 11km.. the same distance i run in the evenings at home! And Yishun to Toa Payoh seems like a much greater distance.

Running in the mornings also frees up my evenings to spend time with Jo and friends.

Yes, insanity is truly a wonderful thing. Only insanity can make me go for a 11km run at 11pm after spending 13 long mentally exhausting hours at work.

And i ran my personal best. Heart rate was 74%, speed was 9.2km/h when my average is 78%, 8.8km/h!

California climbing road trip - 2008!

Eugene, Chris, PJ & I have decided to plan for a climbing trip to California in June/July 2008. Hopefully, my green card would have arrived by then.

The plan is to rent a van or something and travel to Yosemite, the climbing mecca in California. We'll camp out in the National Parks and stay with friends and relatives whenever we can.

We hope to see wide open spaces and have long roads to travel on..

And have to put on warm clothing to climb (and look cool) because it's so freakin cold.

A good view from the climbing site would be nice.

I must.. have.. my.. Habit burger again...

Not forgetting my beer of course.

You'd never realise our air is so bad until you're at a place like this. Damn, i miss the air..

Climbing in KL

Left for a short climbing trip with Dan Wen, Chris and Pei Jun early Thursday morning to Kuala Lumpur. Plan was to climb at Camp 5 on thursday afernoon and on Saturday and at Batu Caves on Friday. We took the 11pm coach home on Saturday and arrived home at 5am on Sunday morning where i proceeded to spend the whole day in bed.

We had ajoining rooms at the Radius International Hotel. Chris, being an SIA employee had a special rate. It is conveniently located near Bukit Bintang shopping area.

In Camp 5 again after waiting for a year.

Pei Jun couldn't contain her excitement.

Her excitement became contagious.

Dan Wen on 'Shiok Sendiri 6a+' Nyamuk wall, Batu Caves. It's a 28m high route! Chris checking me out with those shifty eyes of his.
It has a very balancy start.

I think my next trip to KL will only be a Camp 5 climbing trip. Batu Caves is nice but not worth the effort in having to bring so much climbing equipment. At Camp 5, all you need is your personal equipment and a rope.. and in my case, a 40m rope (instead of 60m)!

But overall, it was a good trip because:
1. Climb at Camp 5 was great (despite the white bitch).

2. Got to eat at my favourite Italian restaurant (See July 06's blog post) at 1 Utama Shopping Centre.

3. Great shopping! Bought a nice adidas jacket for only S$94.00 plus some other cool t-shirts.

I did not enjoy it because:

1. My mood was somehow affected. Whether it was because of work worries or me wishing she was there with me, i don't know..

Anyway, Xinyi and i had a mutual break up. I guess a relationship based on sex was never meant to last. She said she needed more time with her friends (as if i didn't give it to her!) and i told her that i needed to feel cared for in a relationship (yes, i can be needy).

But it's ok. Though I am sad.. i'm relieved at the same time. Work is getting very stressful and i don't need the additional stress of wondering where this is going.

Xinyi, if you ever read this, i want to thank you. You taught me alot of things. In a way, you brought out the best (and worst) of me. I understand myself better now thanks to you. And thank you so much for the great sex (and letting me record some of it), it was the best i ever had. Though you're only 21, i know you're been through a lot in life and i pray to the gods that things will only get better for you.

May we still be good friends and rock climbing buddies. And.. *ahem*, if you ever have an itch that needs to be scratched.. i'm just across the road from you bao bei!

The Krabi trip was good.. and bad at the same time. Good because i was with my climbing buddies and Xin Yi. There's no one i'd rather be with on a climbing trip than my close climbing buddies. And Xin Yi was a BIG bonus.

Bad because it rained most of the time. There were days when all we could do was stay in the room, play Jenga, watch TV and drink Eugene's Chivas (not that i'm complaining mind you). Looks like i'll have to attempt Reminiscence 7a+ on another trip.

Hardcore in Krabi

Brief summary of the bad hardcore:
1. Low tide at Ao Nang. Boat couldn't get off the beach. Everyone got out to push in the water.
2. Low tide at Tonsai. Boat got stuck on a rock. Couldn't get to Tonsai. Boat went to Railay West instead. Had to hike to Tonsai in the dark with ONE torchlight.
3. Chris was feverish and I strained my back core muscles & had food poisoning. Some days were bad and had to be spent in bed. Didn't get to drink as much as i hoped to.
4. Left my passport in Tonsai when we were in Ao Nang. Had to make a rushed trip back to retrieve it.

Brief summary of the good hardcore:
1. Chris & I stuck to our agreement of climbing minimum 6c. Reminiscence was some good shit climbing.

Me, Philip, Dan Wen & Chris. Together again for the first time!

Going hardcore in Krabi

Kidding Chris! Of course I'll climb hardcore with you.. but we also go deep water soloing okie? Keke.

After 3 years.. i have finally signed up for Salsa class so that i can dance with Beverly. Kidding.. but that would still be nice.

Climbing buddies Eugene and Dan Wen have signed up too and we'll be joining climbing buddy Philip soon for his Monday night sessions. Eugene and i were at Philip's regular dance place yesterday to see the dancers in action.. and i must say, there's something therapeutic about watching girls dance.

Chi Running

I highly recommend this book to anyone who runs.. whether you're a seasoned runner or a beginner. The writer incorporates the principles of Tai Chi into running.. hence, Chi Running.

Most people tend to think that you would run with your leg muscles (power running). This book teaches you to run efficiently with your core muscles (chi running) and i tell you, it really really works.

I would really like to go into details as to why i believe in this, but i don't want to seem as it like i'm earning commission or anything!

Role Model

I have a role model now. His name is Mr Chong Liang Chew. A participant in the swimming instructor course at my workplace.

61 years old, retired, practises Chi Running, participates in Biathlons & Marathons. His energy and exuberance is that of someone half his age.

If a man almost twice my age can run marathons, i don't see why i cannot do the same.. and in some way, he makes me look forward to growing old.

The office had an unofficial company dinner a few days ago. I say unofficial because we do not have any budget catered for staff welfare from the Singapore Sports Council, so we basically have to pay for the dinner out of our own pockets. And i'm really glad to know that the reflective strips on my shirt works.

Do you recall a time when we looked at old black and white (and some coloured) photographs of our parents? Do you ever imagine what was going through their minds when the photograph was taken at that very moment? Were they on a trip or posing with their new car etc..

It makes me wonder.. many years from now, what would my children (if i had any) think when they see MY pictures. Pictures of me climbing in krabi, hangin out etc. Will i find them asking me about these pictures and enquiring who the hell is Big Testicle Chris? Moaning climbing egg? Yes, i'd like to think so.. and i would recollect all these wonderful moments and tell them with glee why Chris has a much bigger testicle than normal.

Well.. until that day arrives, i'm going to live my life to the fullest extent so that i'll have more interesting stories to tell.. CARPE DIEM (for you may die tomorrow..).

View of Poda island from Tup island. Earlier, we had gone to Poda island to deep water solo and then made a short trip to Chicken/Tup island to hang out for a few hours. When the tide was high, we made out way back to Poda island to climb.

Am leaving for Krabi in a few hours. I'm not really sure whether to be excited or not. It is after all my THIRD time there this year.

Only wish i could leave knowing there's no worries here back home about the stupid old man..

Since i am not going to Hawaii in December, i purchased something for myself which i have always wanted..

A 0.22 carat brilliant cut diamond.

It is actually a pendant but the shop was able to have it made into a earring (white gold). No more wearing the 'kuching kurap' $200 per pair diamond earrings. Will post pictures of it once i get it!

I had initially decided to go to Hawaii in December. However, it being the school holiday period, i had difficulty getting seats on flights that i wanted. So to make things easier, i decided to postpone the trip to February or March 2007. It would still be whale season there.

Spent Saturday night at the Ministry of Sound.

Loud music, packed sweaty bodies, smoky air... i never felt so old in my life. The only thing i enjoyed were the hot young (female) things that were parading around.

It's been a hectic 2 weeks.. working non-stop without any rest for 2 international events which are back to back - FINA Marathon Swimming World Cup and the FINA World Swimming Officials Conference.

The 2 weeks reminded me so much of national service. I even had to spend a few days at the hotel where the international swimmers were staying. The following picture was taken on one of those extremely hazy days. Guess it pretty much summed up my mood.

On the last day of the World Conference, there was a dinner for the delegates. And we deduced that the vietnamese were basically here for a holiday. Half of them did not turn up for the second day of the conference but so much (plus a few extras) turned up for the dinner! This happy charlie was going around screaming 'VIETNAM NUMBER ONNNNNNNE!'

The Canadian Synchronised Swimming team was in town for training and weather acclimatization before going on to Japan for the World Cup Championships.

They put up a little public performance for us locals this evening. So yup, we had to WORK ON A SATURDAY EVENING!!!

Well, at least the performance was good. I mean really really good!

Holy cow!

Even our local girls got into the action. A good opportunity to showcase our talents.

I'm really going to miss handling synchronised swimming. There's SO MUCH pretty girls to work with (and ogle at).

I finally managed to complete a 6c overhang route which Chris conned me into attempting. Initially, i believed it was way out of my league.. but thanks to Chris's empty promises and sweet talk, i did it. Thank you Chris..

Sunday
Went sailing with Pat at Pasir Ris. It was nice in a sense that it was peaceful and quiet and it was a perfect combination of a doing sport activity and having quiet reflection at the same time.

The day ended with a good dinner and 3 bottles of Tiger. Oh, and THANK YOU Jasper for not turning up for dinner!

Chris is really a great dude who has made me realise that you can do anything when you really put your mind into doing it.

He isn't really capable of cons, empty promises or sweet talk. Ok, maybe he DOES sweet talk PJ but not to me.

Viral infection

Poor cousin Rania was hospitalised for a viral infection in the brain. She cried a lot and was in great discomfort. I guess it was a pretty traumatic experience for her (and us). She was finally discharged today after the anti-biotics ran it's course.

It was Mariana's birthday today so we planned a surprise for her.

Climbing in Camp 5, Kuala Lumpur

Went on a climbing trip to Kuala Lumpur with NTU's University Mountaineering Club over the weekend. The program was to climb at Batu Caves on Saturday and Camp 5 on Sunday. Eugene, Chris, PJ and myself decided to go to Camp 5 for both days instead.

Camp 5 was really great. Other than the irritating ang moh staff who kept telling me to stand 2 metres (go screw yerself!) from the wall when lead belaying, it was a great experience. I think Krabi is great for outdoor climbing & cheap thai food while KL is great for indoor climbing & cheap restaurant food! And i'm thankful to have good company for both of those trips.
